DD010: Amateur Best - Be Happy

DD010 - Amateur Best - Be Happy (LTD 300 Copies on 7”)

A. Be Happy

B. The Wave

PRE-ORDER

Amateur Best is a new creation from London’s Joe Flory (formerly Primary 1). Through soft, lilting pop songs Flory tells the story of James Best, a sometime London DJ, latent alcoholic and lifelong amateur. Best’s hijinx are also chronicled in a Flory illustrated comic book following our hero through the murder and mayhem that is pre-Olimpik London, as James’ fate becomes inexorably entwined with that of the city he lives in.

For our tenth release Double Denim is hugely excited to announce the physical release of a 7” single on February 12th and also an accompanying comic book to complete the story. On the A-side on the single is ‘Be Happy’ a bittersweet song carried along by languid electronics and an anxious but soulful vocal that looks into the mirror and can’t seem to find anything familiar. With an even darker complexion is ‘The Wave’ a song that makes up the B-side of the record, and one that we’ll preview in more depth in a couple of weeks.

DD009: Jesse Ruins

We are excited to announce DD009: Jesse Ruins. His brash, wide-eyed productions are epic in scope - think M83 - with a dark, gloomy exterior, closer to the previous Double Denim Records release for Stay +. ‘A bookshelf sinks into the sand’ is industrial, dirge-like before chinks of light crack the exterior in a gorgeous, sweeping end section. By contrast the B-Side ‘In Icarus’ (which will be coming soon) is a lighter, creaking piece of mutant funk.

DD008: Zulu Winter

We’re delighted to announce our next single release on Double Denim for Zulu Winter. We first stumbled across Zulu Winter after meeting guitarist Henry at our very own DD HQ (he helped us pack our Stay + single). After directing us to their ever-interesting and worldly blog we got to hear a couple of demos they had been hard at work on for a few months.

DD008: Zulu Winter - Never Leave 7” - November 7th

A1. Never Leave

A2. Let’s Move Back To Front

PRE-ORDER

We instantly fell for the charms of Let’s Move Back to Front with its airy grace and yawning guitar lines recalling Beach House or the lighter side of Deerhunter. Never Leave is even more epic, revolving around a vocal sample and howling synth lines building into a pretty epic coda and final chorus.

Take a listen to Never Leave now and keep your ear to the ground for a newly mixed Let’s Move Back to Front shortly.

Outfit - Vehicles

We’re excited today to show you the b-side to Outfit’s huge debut single ‘Two Islands’. ‘Vehicles’ has nestled into our hearts and minds lately as a literal and emotional flip to the dark europhia of ‘Two Islands’. This one unravels only a little quicker as its competing elements finally gel together on the final disco-tinged chorus.

You can still get copies of our limited edition transparent vinyl HERE.

Check out our new artwork above too - we’ve got some special packaging touches planned too.

DD007 - Outfit - ‘Two Islands’ 7”

DD007 - Outfit - ‘Two Islands’ 7”

Release: 12th September 2011

A1. Two Islands

B1. Vehicles

We are delighted to announce the release of Outfit’s first single ‘Two Islands’. We first heard the band a few months ago with their dark mini-narratives ‘Killer’ and ‘Every Night I Dress Up As You’. While those two songs offered a slightly hidden introduction to the group their subtle transmissions step out into plain view on ‘Two Islands’. The song is slow building, euphoric, and meditates on loneliness, absence and the constant flickering of real life.

At over 6 minutes the song represents a big statement and we’re happy to put the Double Denim name to it. Still to come is b-side ‘Vehicles’, a song that shows another slightly different side to the band, with its funk drawl and warm electronics. Keep an eye out for that. Meanwhile enjoy ‘Two Islands’ and look out for a free MP3 download very soon.

Fanzine - Low

image // Jocelyn Catterson and Jeremy Daigneault

There’s a pretty Sun-blanched feel to ‘Low’ by London band Fanzine. The fuzz-soaked guitar and pounding drums feel crisp and burnt - like they could crumble apart at any moment. Instead they keep chugging with forward motion opening up beneath some typically smart lyrics about feeling low (before being down in the dumps was cool). Needless to say we’re totally onboard with this dewy-eyed homage to 90s power-pop.

For more Fanzine fun check out their hand-crafted computer-rendered ‘zine. The mag also has a link to three other songs the band are treating us to today. The eagle-eyed among you might have spotted them already on some of our other favourite blogs
